The Home Energy Audit group are focussed on helping local householders map and reduce their household energy usage. We are currently busy training auditors, who will then be available to help Beechworth residents reduce their energy use (and their power bills!).

Ali Garnett presented the Kitchen Table Conversation project to over 200 delegates at a forum in Melbourne on April 28. The forum was conducted by the Department of Planning and Community Development and was the culmination of state wide discussions by women relating to climate change.

The Melbourne forum saw many climate change issues raised. There were many stories about small towns, health and social issues. Some women were coming from very different perspectives from our “Stage 2” water zone; a scary thought was water security. A common theme raised was the divide between urban and rural areas in Victoria.

A highlight for me was the speaker from the Baw Baw Shire who spoke of their “carbon neutral by 2010” goal.

Christine Nixon spoke very well about the roles of women in bushfire response.

People really liked Ali’s talk on what we are doing in Beechworth. The kitchen table conversation idea is now off to the different corners of the State; it was very enthusiastically received. It was great to see so many positive people and wonderfully active communities.
