All the latest news, information and newsletters from the Beechworth Landcare Group.

Beechworth Landcare acts as the host organisation for Beechworth Sustainability as it is such an appropriate fit with its objectives, and provides opportunities for interest groups to work together and share skills and information.

Most importantly, Landcare is able to provide the necessary insurance and public liability cover for public events and activities, and the structure to ensure good governance for a community organisation.

About Landcare

Landcare was the idea of 2 women, the Hon Joan Kirner, then Minister for Conservation Forests and Lands and the late Heather Mitchell, then President of the Victorian Farmers Federation), and was endorsed by both the National Farmers Federation and the Australian Conservation Foundation when it was inaugurated.

The auspicing body for Landcare, which manages the insurance and incorporation aspects, is the Victorian Farm Tree and Landcare Association (VFTLA). It is supported by, but not controlled by, the VFF.

There is also now a diverse and independent congregation of Landcare groups called the Victorian Landcare Council, whose purpose is to give Landcare an independent voice.

About Beechworth Landcare Group

Beechworth Landcare is our local landcare group. Their vision is to:

  • Raise awareness of and address the community’s environmental concerns through education, promotion and community participation.
  • Through community based projects we will endeavour to understand, record, protect and manage Beechworth’s unique natural heritage and environment.

As well as hosting Beechworth Sustainability, Beechworth Landcare has a number of events and projects of it's own, including the long term revegetation of the Spring Creek area.  The group holds regular events, walks, property visits and workshops for members. It is a friendly community group with community-based projects and education. It's a great way to learn about this region, and the unique Beechworth natural heritage and environment. There are no formal requirements from members - just that people will only do what they can manage, when it suits them - and have fun!

Membership fees are still only $20 (individual/family) or $15 (concession)! Your membership fees go towards

  • Beechworth Landcare's  insurance and public liability costs so we can host events and activities.
  • A subscription to the high quality Landcare Victoria quarterly magazine
  • The number of financial members also determines the level of funding for the group from our regional body - the North East Catchment Management Authority. This funding is also used to support our projects and our events.

More members = more funding = more projects and events = MORE FUN!

Dear Landcare Lovers

While moon sets

atop the trees,

leaves cling to rain.

Bash? (1644-94)

The lovely native grasses around our house cling to the raindrops. They (the grasses) are thriving with the rain we’ve had through winter, and have developed a beautiful ‘weeping’ effect. Sadly we had to cancel our August event (propagating and dividing native grasses) because of the wild weather on 16 August, but we’ve rescheduled this for Sunday 6 September, 10am to 12 noon at Alan and Joy’s property.

Landcare Events

These are the dates for Beechworth Landcare events for the remainder of 2009.

  • Propagating/dividing native grasses – site-based and practical advice Sunday 6 September, 10am-12noon at 40 York Lane Beechworth (Alan and Joy Phillips’ property). Tea and hot scones to follow the dirty work.
  • Bus trip to the Australian Garden at Cranbourne, Saturday 26 September. Register your interest with Donna (5728 3238). Details of costs in the article below.
  • Beechworth Landcare AGM, Wednesday 30 September, 6.30pm for a pot luck dinner, followed by the AGM.
  • Wabbit watching in October (details TBA)
  • Back to Jack’s Creek, Saturday 7 November, 10.30am–12 noon, followed by lunch to share. Includes the launch of the Jack’s Creek poster and website.
  • Our December break up and launch of the eco-tour on Saturday 5 December. 5pm for the launch and to take the tour, 7pm for a BBQ at Sandy Beach, Lake Sambell.

Are you a ‘year half-gone’ or a ‘year half-left’ person? As I look at the calendar of events for 2009, and the projects on our work plan, I’m definitely a year half-left person! There’s a lot to do in the next six months, and we hope you’ll find plenty to interest you.
